Cervical cancer is divided into 4 stages, from I to IV. Detecting cancer at a low stage helps women reduce the risk of metastasis.
- Stage I
Cancer spreads from the cervical lining into the deeper tissue of the uterus and has not yet invaded other organs.
Symptoms of cervical cancer at this stage include abnormal bleeding between periods, postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sex, increased vaginal discharge.
- Stage II
Cervical carcinoma invades beyond the uterus, but not to the pelvic wall or to the lower third of the vagina.
Symptoms of this stage include back pain, leg or pelvic pain; weight loss, fatigue, loss of appetite, or abnormal, smell vaginal discharge.
- Stage III
The tumor involves the lower third of the vagina and/or has spread to the pelvic wall; causes causes hydronephrosis or non-functioning kidney. It also involves regional lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small pea-shaped organs that help fight infection; there is no far-reaching spread.
At this stage, symptoms are usually more severe including frequent back pain; prolonged swelling of the legs; persistent pelvic pain. Patients may also experience unexplained weight loss; physical fatigue, loss of appetite, smelled vaginal discharge, feels discomfort in the vagina.
- Stage IV
The carcinoma has extended beyond the true pelvis or has involved (biopsy proven) the mucosa of the bladder or rectum.
Typical signs such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, leg pain and edema, vaginal burning pain, vaginal discharge smells and has abnormal color… In addition, at this stage, the cells have metastasized to other parts causing pain in the rectal region, digestive disorders; difficulty urinating, feel pain when urinating, bloody urine,..
Cervical cancer stages have different progressive characteristics and symptoms. Not only based on disease symptoms, but it should be combined with thorough testing and diagnosis to assess the stage of the disease, then choose the appropriate treatment.
